The Polman Babel IoT Workshop Makes the Karya Mandiri Waste Bank Smarter
The Community Service (PKM) Team of the Bangka Belitung State Manufacturing Polytechnic, led by Riki Afriansyah, M.T., successfully held a community empowerment workshop at the Karya Mandiri Waste Bank in Karya Makmur Village on Thursday, August 31, 2025. This activity carried the overarching mission of modernizing waste management through the implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) and strengthening public education.
In the training, participants were guided in managing an IoT-based waste bank management system and utilizing digital platforms such as websites and social media to disseminate information. This approach is expected to reach more residents and encourage them to actively sort and manage their waste independently.
The system was implemented directly on-site, involving customers who deposited waste. Furthermore, the PKM team also disseminated information about the Karya Mandiri Waste Bank, which is now accessible through the official website banksampahkaryamandiri.web.id and https://banksampahkaryamandiri.web.id, as well as the Instagram account @BSKMOfficial.
When met in his office on Monday (August 11, 2025), Riki Afriansyah, the head of the PKM team, emphasized that this program still has extensive development opportunities. One such opportunity is research into artificial intelligence (AI)-based waste detection, which can automatically identify waste types without manual input.
Furthermore, other planned innovations include an AI-based waste location search system using drones and the development of a waste-cleaning robot. According to Riki, these breakthroughs will be a major leap forward for waste management, both at the local and national levels.
"This program is expected to be the first step towards modern, efficient, and sustainable waste management. Through technology integration, we want the public to become more aware of the importance of sorting and managing waste from home," he explained.

The Head of the Karya Mandiri Waste Bank, Erliza, SE, welcomed the implementation of this technology, saying, "This system is very helpful. Waste bank management has become easier, and the public can receive education directly from the website," she said.
With the tagline "Turn Waste into Blessings," the Karya Mandiri Waste Bank aims to be a real solution to waste problems in villages. "People are encouraged not only to dispose of waste properly but also to transform it into something that has economic value," she added.
Erliza also expressed her appreciation to the Directorate of Research and Community Service, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, for their support and trust. She stated that this collaboration is crucial for the program's success.
With the synergy between technology, education, and community participation, the Karya Mandiri Waste Bank is optimistic that it can become a model for waste management that can be replicated in Karya Makmur Village.
"This success will serve as a reference for many villages adopting the concept to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment," she said.
