Engaging with the Community, a Lecturer from the Bangka Belitung State Polytechnic for Manufacturing Supports Tarom Livestock Farmers in Their Work
Lecturers and students from Polman Negeri Babel shared knowledge and fostered benefits in collaboration with the Tarom Berkarya livestock farmers' group in Pasir Garam Village, Central Bangka Regency.
Moving beyond purely academic activities on campus, lecturers from the Bangka Belitung State Manufacturing Polytechnic engaged in a Community Service (PKM) initiative targeting the "Tarom Berkarya" livestock group in Pasir Garam Village, Central Bangka Regency, on Monday (September 21, 2026).
The activity involved lecturers Yuke Mareta Ariesta Sandra, S.P., M.Si., Nur Khasanah, S.P., M.Si., and Zanu Saputra, M.Tr.T., alongside students from the Applied Bachelor’s Program in Precision Agriculture.
Yuke Mareta Ariesta Sandra, S.P., M.Si., the head of the PKM team, explained on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) that discussions with members of the Tarom Berkarya livestock group, field agricultural extension officers, and Pasir Garam village officials revealed a group issue regarding suboptimal waste management.
Addressing this issue, the PKM team provided training on composting, utilizing cow manure and other waste materials easily accessible to the local community.
"Instead of going to waste, these materials can be used to make compost, thereby creating a useful product," she explained.
She added that the composting training—which combined theoretical presentations with hands-on practice—provided farmers with new knowledge and ideas on how to utilize available waste materials.
Furthermore, converting waste into compost opens up opportunities to generate economic value for the farmers and the community of Pasir Garam Village," she concluded.
