Strengthening Intellectual Property Rights, Polman Negeri Babel Holds Patent Dissemination Event
The Bangka Belitung State Manufacturing Polytechnic (Polman Babel) continues to promote a culture of innovation by holding an Intellectual Property Dissemination Session in the Campus Hall on Thursday, September 25, 2025. This event was held in collaboration with the Bangka Belitung Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
The event was attended by the Director of Polman Babel, lecturers from each department, and the Head of the Bangka Belitung Islands Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and his staff. The enthusiasm of the participants was evident from the beginning, demonstrating the high level of attention paid to the importance of intellectual property protection.

Two keynote speakers were present on this occasion: the Head of the Patent Application Administration Working Group, DTLST, and Trade Secrets, and the Head of the Polman Babel Center for Research and Community Service (P3KM). Both presented in-depth material on the strategies and technicalities of patent applications in higher education.

The Director of Polman Babel, I Made Andik Setiawan, M.Eng., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of patents as tangible recognition of work resulting from campus research and innovation. "Besides journals, seminars, and direct benefits to the community, patents are crucial. We hope the results achieved will produce high-profile creations that will bring pride to Polman Babel," he said.
I Made explained that patents are not merely legal certificates, but also a symbol of a university's achievements and competitiveness at the national and international levels. He believes that every lecturer and student must be passionate about producing work that has patent value.
"With patents, our work doesn't just remain an idea, but is officially recognized and protected. This will strengthen Polman Babel's reputation," he explained.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights for Babel, Johan Manurung, M.H., expressed his appreciation for Polman Babel's efforts in encouraging patent applications. He stated that universities play a strategic role as centers for innovation and new discoveries.
"The function of universities is vital. Through activities like this, we want to motivate universities to continuously improve the quality and quantity of patents. Patents are not merely administrative matters, but also demonstrate their contribution to higher education," he explained.
Furthermore, Johan highlighted the importance of a culture of sustainable research and innovation on campus so that lecturers are more active in filing patent applications and their work receives clear legal protection," he added.

Another speaker, Indra Dwisaputra, Head of the P3KM Polman Babel, highlighted the benefits of intellectual property protection in higher education. According to him, patents play a role in preventing infringement, encouraging innovation, enhancing the university's reputation, providing incentives, and serving as a form of official recognition for work.
"Patents and simple patents are equally important. Both can serve as a foundation for further research development, while protecting ideas from misuse by others," he explained.

Furthermore, Sonya Pau Adu, S.H., M.H., Head of the Patent Application Administration, DTLST, and Trade Secrets Working Group, explained various features of the current patent application system. She explained the technical aspects of filing and aspects often overlooked by inventors.
"What is often overlooked is title consistency. The invention title, abstract description, and even the transfer of rights letter must be the same. Otherwise, it can become an obstacle in the registration process," she explained.

Through this dissemination, Polman Babel hopes to increase the number of lecturers' works that can be protected by intellectual property rights, while also strengthening the role of higher education," she said.
